Champions League round-up: Napoli win to stay top of Group C

Napoli maintained their one-point advantage at the top of Group C with a 3-1 win over Red Star Belgrade on Wednesday.   Marek Hamsik opened the scoring for Napoli on 11 minutes before Dries Mertens scored twice to secure victory. El-Fardou Nabouhane struck in the second half for Red Star Belgrade, who remain bottom. Liverpool  must beat  Napoli  1-0 or by a two-goal margin to advance following a 2-1 defeat against  Paris Saint-Germain  in Group C. Juan Bernat and Neymar gave Paris Saint-Germain a 2-0 lead after 37 minutes before James Milner pulled a goal back from the penalty spot on the stroke of half-time. Liverpool suffered a third successive away defeat in the competition this season. Lionel Messi scored a record 106th Champions League goal for a single club as  Barcelona  beat  PSV Eindhoven  2-1 to confirm top spot in Group B. Messi struck a stunning opener in the 61st minute just when frustration seemed to be building for Ernesto Valverde's team. Li

PSG 2-1 Liverpool: Reds drop to third in Champions League group after defeat

Liverpool were beaten 2-1 by PSG in their penultimate Champions League game to leave their hopes of reaching the knockout stages in the balance.  It took 13 minutes for PSG to take the lead at the Parc des Princes as Juan Bernat swept home at the near post before Neymar (37) slotted home after Edinson Cavani's flick was saved by Alisson. James Milner (45+1) pulled a goal back for Liverpool just before the break after the visitors were given a penalty when Angel Di Maria fouled Sadio Mane in the area. But neither side could find another goal in the second half and Group C will go down to the final matchday in two weeks' time, with Liverpool needing to beat Napoli 1-0 or by two clear goals to make it into the knockout rounds. Raging Buffon's crazy UCL farewell

Gianluigi Buffon raged late into the night after a wild match in Madrid as the Juventus legend was sent off in what was probably the final Champions League match of an extraordinary career. The veteran goalkeeper's frustration spilt over at the Santiago Bernabeu after Juventus beat Real Madrid 3-1 on the night, but were eliminated 4-3 on aggregate in the quarterfinal after English referee Michael Oliver awarded the Spaniards a hotly contested 97th-minute penalty. "In place of a heart he has a rubbish bin," raged 40-year-old Buffon after Oliver pointed to the spot after Mehdi Benatia's challenge on Lucas Vazquez in the dying minutes. Buffon was given his first ever red card in 117 Champions League games and after Wojciech Szczesny had taken his place in the Juventus goal, Cristiano Ronaldo coolly slotted home the spot kick to put defending champions Real Madrid through to the semifinals. "You have to be a murderer to make the last two decisions the refe

Ronaldo penalty takes Real into semis

Cristiano Ronaldo rescued Real Madrid from a shock Champions League exit as his injury-time penalty allowed the holders to edge out Juventus in the most dramatic of quarter-finals on Wednesday, taking them through despite a 3-1 defeat.   Real had looked certain to make the last four following last week's 3-0 first-leg victory in Turin, but Juve staged a sensational comeback in the return at the Santiago Bernabeu.  Mario Mandzukic's two first-half headers kept the dream alive before Blaise Matuidi capitalised on a Keylor Navas error to pull the Italians level with half an hour left.  But, just as a thrilling second leg looked to be heading for extra time, English referee Michael Oliver awarded Real a penalty in stoppage time.  With the game in the 97th minute, Ronaldo made no mistake from 12 yards, ensuring a 3-1 defeat on the night but a 4-3 win on aggregate. Gianluigi Buffon, making his 125th and perhaps final Champions League appearance before retirement, was sent

Manchester City's Pep Guardiola sent to the stands by referee for furious reaction to disallowed goal vs Liverpool

Pep Guardiola  was sent to the stands at half-time of  Manchester City's Champions League clash against Liverpool  for his angry protestations over a disallowed goal at the  Etihad Stadium . The City coach ran up to referee Antonio Miguel Mateu Lahoz just after the half-time whistle in the quarter-final second-leg clash had been blown, to make his feeling clears about Leroy Sane's 41st-minute effort being ruled out for offside. Guardiola was seen shouting angrily at the official and gesturing wildly before Antonio Miguel Mateu Lahoz decided to send the City boss to the stands. City, who came into the second leg clash trailing 3-0 from the first leg, had dominated the first half and took a second-minute lead through Gabriel Jesus. Raheem Sterling, who did not start the first leg at Anfield, played a major role in the opener after he forced Virgil van Dijk into conceding possession near the touchline. When is the Europa League draw? UK start time, how to follow online, TV channel, every club in the semi-finals

They won’t take anything for granted but  Arsenal  can be fairly optimistic that they will be in the hat for the Europa League semi-finals draw on Friday. A 4-1 home win against CSKA Moscow in the quarter-final first leg means it would take a remarkable performance by the Russian giants on their home ground to stop Arsene Wenger’s side reaching a first European semi-final since 2009. The Arsenal boss described the Europa League as tougher this season than it has ever been before and the semi-final draw could pit the Gunners against one of their most fearsome opponents yet, with Atletico Madrid, RB Lepzig and Lazio currently on course to join them. AS Roma 3 Barcelona 0: Barca bottle Italian job in huge Champions League shock at Stadio Olimpico

Roma  pulled off one of the all-time  Champions League  shocks as they beat  Barcelona  3-0 in Rome to reach the  Champions League semi-finals on away goals. With Barca 4-1 ahead on aggregate after a comfortable Camp Nou victory in the first leg, Roma went all-out attack from the off at  Stadio Olimpico . Roma were all over Barcelona for the first half as the Spanish giants laboured both on and off the ball, and Edin Dzeko got the ball rolling with a neat poked finish after he ghosted onto a simple high through-ball just six minutes into the tie. Patrik Schick wasted two presentable chances and Dzeko had a header saved  as Roma  went into search of a second goal before half-time, but Barca held on to a two-goal advantage over the tie heading into the interval.
