Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s record-breaking start at Arsenal

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang made it a record-breaking start to his Arsenal career by scoring in their  3-2 win over Southampton . He cannot play in the Europa League but there are signs that Aubameyang can become very important to Arsenal, writes Adam Bate. Arsenal's Premier League season seems destined to be played out against a backdrop of empty seats and apathy but Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang is doing his best to breathe life into the Emirates Stadium every other weekend. The January signing from Borussia Dortmund was on target again in  Arsenal's 3-2 win over Southampton on Sunday . Aubameyang has now scored in each of his last four Premier League appearances for the Gunners and even broke a record against Saints. With six goals and one assist in total, he has now been directly involved in more goals in his first seven Premier League games than any other Arsenal player in the competition's history. It has been an encouraging start. It must be strange for

Liverpool's Mohamed Salah named PFA player of the month for March

Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah has been named as the PFA player of the month for March. The Egypt international scored six times in four matches against Newcastle, Manchester United, Watford and Crystal Palace over the month, while also adding an assist. It is the fourth time this season Salah has won the award, which is voted on by the fans, having also collected it for November, December and February. The 25-year-old is the Premier League's top scorer with 29 goals, five more than Harry Kane in second place. Salah sat out  Saturday's 0-0 draw against Everton  after suffering a suspected groin injury in the  3-0 win over Manchester City in their Champions League quarter-final first leg on Wednesday . However, Liverpool boss  Jurgen Klopp is optimistic Salah will be available for the second leg at the Etihad Stadium on Tuesday. via sky sport

Kane hopeful of catching Salah

Tottenham Hotspur striker Harry Kane remains hopeful of overhauling Liverpool's Mohamed Salah in the race for Premier League Golden Boot but is also focused on helping Spurs finish the season strongly. Kane is bidding to end the campaign as the division's top scorer for the third time in a row, a feat no other player has managed since Arsenal's Thierry Henry won the last of his four scoring titles in 2006. The 24-year-old England international has scored 24 times in the league and currently trails Salah by five goals with six games remaining. Liverpool have five fixtures left. "I still believe I can," Kane told British media. "Look, whatever happens, there are still games to go. I've got to focus on my game. I can't control what he (Salah) does. "Obviously as a striker, it would be great to win the Golden Boot again and I will keep working hard from now until the end of the season." Kane claimed Tottenham's winner in Saturda
Memphis Depay continued his hot streak of form as Lyon won 5-0 at Metz on Sunday to climb above Marseille as the two sides fight it out for Champions League qualification in France. The Dutchman scored one goal and set up the other four, with Lyon claiming a fourth consecutive win to move into third place in Ligue 1 above Marseille, who could only draw 0-0 with Montpellier in the late game. Well adrift of champions-elect Paris Saint-Germain and second-placed Monaco, goal difference is all that separates the sides with six games of the season remaining. Lyon were 2-0 up at half-time against Ligue 1's bottom club, with Depay twice sending in corners for Brazilian defender Marcelo to score. The former Manchester United man got his name on the scoresheet in the 65th minute and then teed up Bertrand Traore and Mariano Diaz for further goals as Lyon won 5-0 on their travels for the fourth time this season. Depay has now scored 13 league goals this season, with four coming in h

Ronaldo rests crucial to Madrid's dream

With the score poised at 1-1 in Sunday's Madrid derby in La Liga between Real and Atletico, Cristiano Ronaldo's number appeared on the fourth official's electronic board in red and the crowd in the Santiago Bernabeu fell silent. Real Madrid coach Zinedine Zidane took off the Portuguese forward for Karim Benzema in the 64th minute. Even though his careful management of Ronaldo's minutes has become increasingly obvious, it is still jarring to see him removed. Ronaldo had sent Real ahead 11 minutes earlier, positioning himself perfectly to volley Gareth Bale's looping cross beyond the reach of the previously unbeatable Jan Oblak. However, Antoine Griezmann fired Atletico level moments later. With Ronaldo off the pitch, rested ahead of Wednesday's Champions League quarterfinal second leg clash in Turin against Juventus, the game petered out. "Cristiano is Cristiano, he has been this player all his life, scoring 50 goals a season. It is true that there
Torres, 34, has started only three La Liga matches this season and made 17 appearances from the bench, scoring two goals. "I want to take advantage of this opportunity to say this will be my last season at the club," Torres said at a promotional event on Monday. "It has not been an easy decision. Looking at the reality, the circumstances, perhaps it's for the best. I accept that I'm not having much of a role, so perhaps this is the moment to step aside for others." The Spanish striker is in his second spell at the club he left in 2007 to sign for Liverpool. He also had stints at Chelsea and AC Milan before returning to Spain in 2015. "It's difficult to say goodbye for a second time because I wanted to retire here, but things don't always go as you want," added Torres. "I feel physically and mentally able to keep playing. I am in good shape and I will look elsewhere for games." via super sport

City need to produce 'the perfect game'

Manchester City must overturn a 3-0 deficit against Liverpool in the second leg of their Champions League quarterfinal tie on Tuesday and manager Pep Guardiola said that will require "the perfect game" from his players. City go into the match on the back of a 3-2 defeat in the Premier League to rivals Manchester United on Saturday when a win would have secured the title. Guardiola's side gave up a two goal lead in that game and they know that even a single slip-up against Liverpool will make their task of progressing to the semifinals almost impossible. "Of course to go through you have to make the perfect game, create chances, be clinical, concede few chances, all the conditions have to be perfect," said the Spaniard. "The result is tough but we have 90 minutes and in football anything can happen. What we are going to do is try. We have to score the first one, then make the second one. We'll see the momentum, try to keep it longer and then we&

Di Francesco hoping for Barca 'miracle'

Roma coach Eusebio Di Francesco has urged his side to believe in a "miracle" to overturn a 4-1 deficit against Barcelona and advance to the Champions League semifinals on Tuesday. "We have to believe in something important and go for it with great love and passion. They will play their best to confirm the result but we can also produce a miracle," Di Francesco told a pre-match press conference. "It's difficult, but we have to believe. We stopped (Lionel) Messi (in the first leg) and we have to try to do it again tomorrow." Edin Dzeko scored a valuable away goal after own goals from Daniele De Rossi and Kostas Manolas in the Camp Nou, but the Italians need a remarkable comeback at the Stadio Olimpico to advance to final four for the first time since 1984. Here are some talking points ahead of the quarterfinal second leg clash: MESSI HOPING FOR MORE ROMAN HEROICS Barcelona star Lionel Messi returns to the Stadio Olimpico where his stunning h

Guillem Balague: Guard of honour row is ridiculous, plus other La Liga talking points

Guillem Balague provides his thoughts on a busy week in Spain, including why the Barcelona-Real Madrid guard of honour row is ridiculous. Barcelona maintained their unbeaten record in La Liga with a  3-1 victory over Leganes on Saturday , thanks to Lionel Messi's hat-trick, while the  Madrid derby ended 1-1 at the Bernabeu  on Sunday. Zinedine Zidane says Real Madrid will not give rivals Barcelona a guard of honour if they were to claim the title before the  Clasico  on May 6, due to the fact Barcelona did not line up for them after winning the Club World Cup in December. And Guillem's not overly impressed by the row... Guard of honour row 'ridiculous' Remember, Barcelona need three wins and a draw, if Atletico win all of their games, and that fourth game would be against Real Madrid at the Nou Camp, so there would be no need for a guard of honour anyway. I remember three times that Real or Barca have done the guard of honour for each other; B
