Pirlo calls on hot-headed Buffon for testimonial

Former Italy star Andrea Pirlo on Thursday defended Gianluigi Buffon for his Champions League outburst as he named the veteran goalkeeper among his line-up for his testimonial on 21 May.
"If I'd been on the pitch, it would have burnt to go out like that," said Pirlo, "when you play a game like that and then lose the chance to play for it 10 seconds from the end, it makes you crazy."
Juventus beat Real Madrid 3-1 on Wednesday night, but were eliminated 4-3 on aggregate in the quarterfinal after English referee Michael Oliver awarded the Spaniards a hotly contested 97th-minute penalty which Cristiano Ronaldo converted.
Pirlo – a former Juventus, Inter Milan and AC Milan midfielder – called time on his illustrious career last November after winning the 2006 World Cup, two Champions League titles and six Serie A trophies.
And he presented details of his farewell game 'La Notte del Maestro' (The Night of the Master) which will take place next month at the San Siro and will include some 2006 World Cup winners such as Buffon, Francesco Totti and Alessandro Del Piero.
"A hot-head Buffon would have exaggerated talk about crimes against sporting humanity but it must be understood," said Pirlo.
"It was his last game in the Champions League and he hoped to win it. A penalty so doubtful after having played a match like this at the Bernabeu makes the nerves jump.
"The penalty? You can give and not give, personally I would have avoided it ten seconds from the end."
Pirlo – capped 116 times for Italy during a 13-year career until 2015 – played his final two years with New York City FC.
His farewell game will take place at San Siro where he spent the bulk of his career with Inter Milan (1998-2001) and then AC Milan (2001-2011).
He played for Juventus for four years until 2015.
"I chose 21 May because 21 is my number and I made my debut in May," explained Pirlo, adding that all gate receipts will be donated to charity.
Pirlo said he had never been tempted away from his native northern Italy despite offers from Barcelona.
"There were negotiations over the years, but there was nothing better than Milan and I stayed. Three big clubs, and the one of my city, I’m satisfied."

Zidane: “We will not give Barcelona a guard of honour”

Real Madrid  coach  Zinedine Zidane  revealed that his team will not give  Barcelona  a traditional guard of honour if the two teams meet right after Barcelona become La Liga Champions. “We will not give a guard of honour, this is my decision,” said Zidane when asked about the matter. “Barcelona didn’t follow the tradition when we won the Club World Cup. This is my decision,” he added. Zidane is clearly stating that this is not something decided by the club in order to protect Real Madrid from potential criticism. Barcelona gave Real Madrid a guard of honour back in 2008 but they said that they would not do the same thing this past winter when Madrid conquered the Club World Cup. Nobody knows whether Los Blancos will finally face Barcelona under the circumstances which could make Madrid give said guard of honour, but it’s now clear that Zidane and his men will not hear anything about it.

Luka Modric, His Mentor and the Perjury Case That Has Divided Croatia

This is the story of two men. One of them is Luka Modric. His name is known all over the world as  Real Madrid 's midfield lynchpin, orchestrator of the side that has won three of the last four UEFA Champions League titles and is gunning to retain its crown this season. The other man is a mentor to him. His name is Zdravko Mamic, the most powerful man in Croatian football. Part of the story involves a transfer between Modric's former teams—Dinamo Zagreb, the most successful club in Croatian history, and  Tottenham Hotspur , one of England's grandest outfits—and a court case that has captivated Croatia. The transfer, for a fee reported by  Marca  to be €21 million, happened in 2008, four years before Modric was bought by Real Madrid. The transfer saga is a sticking point in a legal case brought against Mamic, a former director of Dinamo Zagreb and ex-vice president of the Croatian Football Federation. Mamic was arrested in July 2015. He is accused of corruption a...
